HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita and HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita publicized letters to bnei yeshivos ahead of municipal elections to be held on Tuesday, 18 Cheshvan 5774. Simply stated, the letters instruct bnei Torah not to follow the Bnei Torah lists, the Degel Hatorah breakaway party headed by HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita.
Chaim Epstein, the Bnei Torah party candidate in the Jerusalem race told Kikar Shabbos on Monday, 17 Cheshvan that the gedolim shlita are not referring to him, but the Tov party headed by Chanoch Werdiger.
He added that he has consulted with HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita who instructs him to continue, so he is fine with running since he is listening to his rav. He is quoted saying “Don’t place me in a machlokes with rabbonim. I have my rav and I am following his instructions… We have our derech and follow our rabbonim shlita…”

Even if I had a vote and thought of voting for Epstein, his statement would have blown it. The streets of Yerushalayim Ihr Hakodesh are littered with expensively printed flyers and booklets making it crystal clear that Rabbis Steinman and Kanievsky are telling the bnei Torah not to vote for the list of Rav Orbach and not to vote for Epstein as Mayor. To suggest otherwise is simply to make a fool of yourself and try to make a fool of me.
