The weekly Belz-affiliated BaKehilla magazine commissioned an election poll from the Yifat Gat Mutagim Institute, citing in the last municipal election, the latter’s prediction proved accurate.
With Election Day nearing, 18 Cheshvan 5774, the following is the result of the poll published in the Thursday, 13 Cheshvan edition of BaKehilla.
Mayor Rabbi Moshe Abutbul leads in the race with 47.6% of the vote followed by Likud candidate Eli Cohen (37%). 12.7% of respondents are yet undecided so it can go either way.
From the Yediot Achronot perspective, voters feel this is a ‘make it or break it’ race – meaning to say the chareidim and non-chareidi voters feel the winner will determine the future of the city. It reports that if the incumbent is reelected, 14% of the non-chareidi voters have stated they plan to leave the city and an additional 16% contemplate doing the same. No figures are given to indicate if chareidi residents would leave should Eli Cohen, the non-chareidi candidate emerge the winner.

Baruch Hashem. It is good to heat this good news. Rav Moshe Abutbul is a wonderful mentch and mayor and will continue to be so for the next 5 years IY”H.
This is so sad – people would feel so unwelcome that thy would leave if their candidate doesn’t win. What does Hashem think of such a situation?
Bet Shemesh has fallen to the lowest of the lows.
It has lost its status as the up-coming Charedi kehilla particularly for Torahdik Anglo/Olim families. This machlokes has ripped apart people and has caused a large chasm. Maybe it can be fixed after the election yet don’t believe that Abutbul people want to see that happen.
