The head of the Temple Institute, Rabbi Yisrael Ariel was detained by Israel Police for questioning on Har Habayis on Thursday morning, 6 Cheshvan 5776. Yehuda Glick was detained along with the rav.
According to an eyewitness report quoted by Kol Yehudi, the rav was detained as he was leaving the holy site, dragged on the ground by police.
Yehuda Glick explains that he led a group and the event ended without incident, following which he went to the Kosel. He then received notification that another group was waiting. When he arrived at the gate to enter Har Habayis he was detained by police, who told him he was being held because he disturbed the peace. “This was the first time I was detained and I haven’t a clue why” he added.
It appears Rabbi Yisrael Ariel’s crime was that he gave a dvar Torah on Har Habayis.
It must be noted that according to the Poskei Hador one is absolutely forbidden to visit the Temple Mount, and there is an Issur Kares for one that goes there.
Four years ago on Sukkos, Israeli President Shimon Peres paid a visit to the Sukkah of Maran Hagon Rav Elyashiv ZATZAL, where Rav Elyashiv called on the President to prevent Jews from visiting Har HaBayis, stating it is an act that that is viewed as extremely provocative by the goyim. Maran stated everything possible must be done to avoid a religious war, and the provocateurs are playing with fire.
Maran is quoted as explaining to the president that Halacha forbids going onto Har HaBayis but today, it is more than this, it is an act that may lead to a religious war and bloodshed.

Clearly, there are poskim who believe otherwise. Rav Ariel would not go there if this was not so.
Dear Editor – The picture you posted is of harav Yaacov Ariel. Wrong brother.
I think it should be noted that Rav Ariel was among the first Paratroopers officers to liberate Har Habayit in 1967 and has continued to fight for Jewish control ever since!
Acording to your story, the one arrested was Rav Yisrael Ariel.
Your picture is of Rav Yaakov Ariel, his brother.
Rabbi Yisrael Ariel is knowledgeable to know what is mutar and what is assur. IF he went up to Har HaBayit he was doing it in a manner that is permitted.
YWN don’t give up the am ha-aretz view of halacha. ask Rabbi Yisrael Ariel personally and direct what is the halacha and you might see that what you call the godali hador could agree with him…
I understand that you might disagree with him going up on the Temple Mount, but to emphatically state that it is Asur is wrong, there are other opinions on the matter.
As is always said regarding Jews – 2 Rabbis 3 Opinions
And as long as you are allowing it, I think Israel’s position of allowing the Waqf to dictate policy, is insane!
Israel is a democracy not a theological state yet.
Therefore human rights SHOULD allow Rav Yisrael to ascend to the Mount when he desires following rules of the State. Most poskim are against visiting Har Habayis due to impurity cases. Rav Yisrael is aware of spiritual impurity and the exact guidelines of where and how? others should not ascend. Other poskim were against due to incitement to our ‘evil brothers’, this holds no value since our existence is INCITEMENT….
Got the picture wrong, and so is the info regarding going on the mt. wrong
