Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat did not seek to hide his anger over statements made earlier in the week by Shas leader Aryeh Deri. Barkat was referring to Deri’s announced support for Moshe Leon in the latter’s bid to unseat the mayor in the upcoming elections. Barkat decried Deri’s capitalizing on the shiva to advance a political candidate’s election effort.
In his comments to Channel 1 News, Barkat stated that now, “two days after the funeral would be a good time to avoid such comments”. He told the news that he postponed a number of scheduled events for he feels that are not appropriate during the shiva for the gadol hador.

The mayor, who is a mensch, is perfectly correct. But what do you expect of an unmensch like Deri?
