Rabbi David Yosef, a son of Maran HaGaon HaRav Chaim Ovadia Yosef Shlita spoke with Kol Berama Radio on Thursday, 29 Tishrei 5774. Following is a synopsis of his remarks.
The situation concerning abba is still not good and he still needs much Rachmei Shomayim. We must understand this. He is still connected to mechanical assisted breathing while doctors contemplate unhooking him since it appears he can breathe on his own.
Yes, there is progress but all of this is still far from recovery. He is advancing and improving in all parameters but still has a long way to go. He is no longer in immediate life threatening danger but still in life threatening danger. Even before being admitted to the hospital, even a month or two ago, his condition was not good.
The point that must be understood is that one who is ill as abba is, the situation involves many different systems of the body. B”H there is steady progress in all areas however, to me, it appears we are very far from the rav being sent home.
Our belief if that regarding abba, the tzibur needs him and he has so much merit and B”H tefilos. The doctors remain optimistic but we know the ongoing tefilos are truly improving his condition. We, the sons, heard from the doctors what we wanted, always the optimism, while others heard less optimistic evaluations in the beginning of his current hospital stay.
B”H now he is awakening and he is responding to us, but he cannot speak, most likely due to the breathing machine. He remains sedated most of the time. It is hard for me to know if the head movements are a response to me. That is how I see it.
However, I told him last night when I visited about the large khal at the Kosel, and how so many were mispallel on his behalf. I saw the tears rolling from his eyes and of this I am certain. My brother Rav Yitzchak was there too, telling abba about the tefilos around the country on his behalf and that he understood and showed emotion.
Please, he remains in danger and yes, B”H he is now improving but we must have the tefilos and limud Torah so that abba can return to his health.
The tzibur is urged to continue being mispallel on behalf of
