THE LATEST: COVID Cases Surge In Lakewood, NYC Threatens To Limit Shuls In Hotspots

LAKEWOOD NJ:

COVID-19 cases have risen in Monmouth and Ocean counties over the last two weeks to levels not seen since New Jersey became a global coronavirus hotspot in the spring.

Ocean County reported its largest single-day total of the pandemic on Sept. 16 when it added 187 new cases to its tally. Three of the five largest one-day tallies in Ocean County were reported during the week ending Sept. 19, according to the county Health Department.

In total, cases in Ocean County have increased by about 8% over the two-week period between Sept. 10 and 24. In Monmouth County, cases have risen 5% over that span, according to data reported by both counties.

The spike has attracted the attention of state officials and the concern of local health departments, but officials say there are several key differences between this recent uptick and the outbreak in the spring that filled hospitals and led to hundreds of deaths in the two counties.

NEW YORK CITY:

The city Health Department is warning that private schools and non-essential businesses could be forced to close in neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens seeing spikes in coronavirus cases.

“If the indicators continue to rise, there must be additional enforcement actions,” the Health Department said in a statement late Thursday. “For the first time in the city’s recovery period, there could be the immediate scaling back of activities in these ZIP codes if progress is not made by Monday evening (Sept. 28).”

The department said that starting Friday there will be regular inspections of all non-public schools within clusters and their adjacent ZIP codes. The number of enforcement staff will continue to increase in order to make sure mask and social distancing requirements are complied with in the areas, the agency said.

The clusters include the following neighborhoods that have seen an increase in infection rates: Gravesend/Homecrest (6.0%), Midwood, (4.95%), Edgemere Far Rockaway (4.08%), Kew Gardens (3.99%), Borough Park (3.53%), Bensonhurst/Mapleton (3.16%), Gerritsen Beach/Homecrest/Sheepshead Bay (3.07%), Flatlands/Midwood (3.06%) and Williamsburg (1.67%).

Among the actions that the city could take are prohibiting all gatherings of more than 10 people; issuing fines for refusals to wear a mask after being offered a mask; ordering private schools and child care centers to close if they don’t meet DOE standards; closing all non-essential businesses immediately.

The Sheriff and NYPD are continuing to monitor mask compliance in the neighborhoods, the department said, adding compliance has been “overwhelmingly low compared to other areas of the city.”

Officials have been engaging community leaders and members about the increase in cases and how to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the NYC Test and Trace Corps and Department of Health have continued on-the-ground outreach and engagement. The Test and Trace Corps is also deploying mobile testing units to areas in Midwood, Williamsburg, Borough Park, Kew Gardens and Far Rockaway.

“To support this push for testing, a new round of robocalls were made to communities of concern and a direct mailing will go next week,” the department said. “Newspaper ads in local and community papers continue with a focus this week on Yom Kippur. In addition, five sound trucks and multiple ambulances to amplify testing messaging in English and Yiddish were sent out (Thursday) and will continue through Friday.”

  1. let’s tell it to them. before you come to us make sure there are no massive protests. otherwise leave us alone. if it doesn’t help them put up a banner
BLACK LIVES MATTER and they’ll leave you alone
    hope you get the point.

  2. It makes me want to vomit hearing this guy tischler speak…besides the fact that anythingbhe said doesnt make any sense does he have no shame to talk in public like that….i dont know who he is but i hope he doesnt represent any other jews he definitly doesnt represent me.

  3. If this nutcase become the face of the frum community in NYC, than we will have much worse problems than the virus. When responsible askanim stay silent or equivocate, this type of garbage will become the stereotype of the frum tzibur.

  4. I have spoke to a few people who take Vitamin D 5000-10000 iu a day and none of them have gotten the COVID virus nor do they have anti bodies. All of them were exposed to COVID by their spouses and friends and yet they have not been infected.

    Coincidence? Perhaps

But perhaps it fits what many researchers have found.

People do yourself and your family a favor and take Everyday with food the following supplements:
    Vitamin D 5000iu
    Vitamin C 1000mg
    Zinc 50 mg
If you can get a hold of
    Quercetin 500-1000mg

Higher levels of vitamin D in the blood has shown to have a lower risk of being infected by COVID. Good levels of Zinc in your cells will block the virus from replicating

Vitamin C and Quercetin help Zinc penetrate into the cells

  5. What an embarrassment to the frum community
An ostensibly frum man calling people a piece of garbage in front of 20 cameras

I’m shocked that this is how a frum man behaves before yom kippur

  6. “perhaps it fits what many researchers have found”

Actually there is no real evidence for those recommendations, and the huge dosages you recommend can cause significant side effects. Don’t do it.

Dangers of too much Vitamin D: weakness, fatigue, sleepiness, headache, loss of appetite, dry mouth, metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, and excessive levels of calcium in your blood.

Dangers of too much Vitamin C: stomach upset, diarrhea and kidney stones.

Dangers of too much zinc: mouth irritation, metallic taste, nausea, permanent loss of smell, and copper deficiency that can result in lack of red blood cells to supply our bodies with oxygen or irreversible effects on the nervous system like tingling skin sensation, impaired coordination or muscle stiffness that can affect movement and speech. Zinc can also reduce the absorption of other drugs if you are taking them.

As I said, don’t do it.

  7. Take it down please! You are inciting hatred and violence against קהל השם כולם קדושים
What will you say before the kisey hakavod?

  8. Wrong Wrong Wrong To Charlie Hall
on his claims of nutrient overdose side effects.
These side effects you pulled off the internet. Lovely. But if you tried to get this claim of yours peer-approved, as they say, you’d have to do better than that!!! There’s not a scintilla of a connection.
You clearly have not a ml or a mg of a clue about what constitutes overdoses in this realm. They have to be Megadoses – off the charts for extended periods of time ongoing.
The suggested dosages listed on the other comment are standard and not harmful!
They are slightly higher that the govt established mdr’s – why? Mdr was established eons ago as the amounts of the nutrients deemed minimal to keep a person alive and not develop deficiency diseases such as scurvy. That’s all it’s for, and frankly quite outdated anyway.
    Don’t advertise your ignorance.
