Poll Shows Tighter Race For Mayor Among Jewish Voters

In the first general election matchup poll, released Tuesday, Bill de Blasio enjoys a commanding lead over his Republican rival Joe Lhota.

Hence, while Mr. de Blasio’s overall lead is almost impossible for Mr. Lhota to overcome, his lead among Jewish voters (who make up roughly 17% of the electorate on election day) is not so significant compared to the general public, suggesting there’s an opening for Mr. Lhota to make a play in the Jewish community.

According to the WSJ-NBC4-Marist poll, Mr. Lhota’s support among Jewish voters is at 36%, trailing Mr. de Blasio, who attracts 56% of support, by 20 points.

Jewish voters are also more inclined to support the current practice of Stop and Frisk and less supportive of Mr. de Blasio’s plan to tax the rich.

Only 40% of Jewish voters in New York City — compared to 59% among the general public — think de Blasio’s ideology is about right. 43% believe he is too liberal. When it comes to voters’ perceptions of Lhota, 40% report his ideology is about right. 30% think he is too conservative while 5% believe he is too liberal. 25% are not sure.

  1. The 4th paragraph of this article states: “Jewish voters are also more inclined to support the current practice of Stop and Frisk and less supportive of Mr. de Blasio’s plan to tax the rich.” What is the source of this statement? Was it found in the same poll reported in the previous paragraph? In another poll? By someone with his/her finger in the wind?
