Police in Manhattan wounded two bystanders during a weekend standoff with a suspect. But statistics show that NYPD officers are firing their weapons less.
The department says the number of incidents where officers intentionally fired is down from 42 in 2012 to 27 in 2013.
Saturday’s shooting was the first time officers have struck bystanders this year.
There were 13 people wounded during the same period last year. That includes nine who were struck when officers opened fire on an armed man outside the Empire State Building.
In the most recent shooting, officers said they believed the man was armed, but he wasn’t. Police say the bullets struck a 54-year-old woman in the knee and a grazed a 35-year-old woman in the buttocks.
