Former City Comptroller Bill Thompson is expected to bow out of the race for mayor at the steps of City Hall, he so aspired to occupy, at 11am this morning.
The announcement came as canvassing showed no shift of the vote and supporters flocking over to Bill de Blasio. Earlier Monday morning, Capital New York reported that six black and Latino elected officials representing the younger, upcoming generation of the Democratic Party across four boroughs announced they are switching their support in the Democratic mayoral primary from Bill Thompson to Bill de Blasio.
The electeds announcing their switch today include Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn, Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr., — an early Thompson supporter — Eric Adams, Democratic nominee for Brooklyn borough president and currently a state senator from central Brooklyn where de Blasio did surprisingly well, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, a rising power broker in Upper Manhattan’s growing Latino community, Jose Peralta, a state senator in Queens whose heavily Latino area was one of the most heavily targeted areas by the Thompson campaign, and Rep. Nydia Velazquez, who remained neutral during the race.
The decision was made Sunday night after a private meeting with de Blasio, according to a source.
