While maintaining a Western diplomatic exterior, there can be no doubt that modern day Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, are committed to continuing the role of being the primary weapons supplier of the Axis of Evil nations. According to a report in the Russian Kommersant newspaper, Putin continues defying the White House and EU with his latest offer, seeking to supply Iran with new S-300 advanced anti-aircraft system as well as assistance in building another nuclear reactor.
Just days ago during an AP interview, Putin confirmed reports that a partial delivery of the S-300 components has been made to Syria. Now, years after a deal with Iran was foiled, Putin tries to peddle his military hardware again, and where better than Iran. Back in 2007 Putin was moving ahead with a deal with Iran but a UN Security Council vote to impose sanctions on Iran brought that deal to an abrupt end. Without Russia’s assistance and technology, Iran, Syria and as a result Hizbullah and Hamas would not be in the position of strength they are today.
Nevertheless, Putin continues to masquerade as a Western politician and he doesn’t hesitate using his nation’s veto power as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Russia continues doing all in its power to prevent the White House from launching a limited surgical strike against Syrian targets after that nation’s leader used chemical weapons against civilians, resulting in a massacre. For Moscow it is not about what is right or wrong, but about protecting its top clients.
The latest report places the value of the new Putin deal with Iran at $800 million, which includes the S-300 system and assistance towards constructing a new reactor in Bushehr.
