Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi David Lau was a guest panelist in a forum hosted by the Plugta Organization. The rav responded to many questions pertaining to his vision for the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and pertaining to the workings and priorities of the institution.
The rav explained that among his priorities is to establish a unit that will focus on the Rabbinate being a transparent government body and this will include appointing an ombudsman to address complaints from citizens.
The panel discussion was held under the banner “Who does the Chief Rabbinate of Israel belong to”. Rabbi Lau explained when he checked the marriage registration unit he found only one clerk present. He acknowledged this is unacceptable and that it would change under his leadership.
Regarding marriage, the chief rabbi explained that for as long as the Knesset does not change the law, Israelis must be married in accordance with Halacha. He acknowledged the need to address the exceptions, the many non-Jews in Israel, adding this too is on his agenda. He detailed how the Chief Rabbinate must be a friendlier body to the people requiring its services, and this will be changed under his administration.
When asked why halachic weddings are the only option available, the rabbi explained he does not wish to see this change for this is essential towards preserving the unique character of Israel as a Jewish country and state as well as the integrity of the residents as the Jewish People.
He continued by detailing the ongoing formation of a body which he calls the Chief Rabbinate Young, young rabbonim who agree to be part of the effort to spread Yiddishkheit nationwide, adding 400 rabbonim are already onboard.

Well spoken and open to improvements.
He outlines a very pragmatic view of his role as chief rav and seems to be aware of the delicate political and religious balancing act he must perform.
