In response to the Bayit Yehudi party’s betrayal of the Torah community, an initiative that began last month, a boycott of dati leumi vendors selling arba minim for Sukkos, a boycott effort is underway.
The trial balloon announcing the planned boycott last month received a mixed response. While reasons to back it may be obvious to some, many feel taking revenge is not the Torah way, and they are firmly opposed to such a boycott without the backing of Gedolei Yisrael Shlita. In addition, some feel that the dati leumi merchant does not have to be the recipient of the wrath of the community when it is the politicians who caused the current situation.
Whatever the case may be, in some chareidi areas the boycott campaign has begun, with signs saying “don’t buy arba minim from the dati leumi enemy” popping up in chareidi areas.
With Yom Kippur on the horizon some fear it will increase conflict among Yidden and therefore, a boycott against other religious Jews is out of the question.

There is a problem with the Israel desk headline writers that occurs every time. The headline of this article is at variance with what is written. If you’d only read the headline, you’d think that there is a massive boycott going on- nothing further from the truth, as is written in the actual article! These haedlines are totally misleading and I would hope that a more balanced headline would appear.
Do you have any evidence that Hareidim ever bought religious anything from Dati Leumi types? It is usually the other way around. Since Hareidim are blocked (a de facto boycott) from the general economy, they tend to dominate those areas which they are allowed into, such as selling “religious articles.”
Where will the financial pain be more painful?
1) Don’t buy from the DL for Sukkos.
2) Don’t give tzedakkah to charedim.
1. The Tzibbur of HaBayit HaYehudi are as much “the Torah community” as you are – if not more so.
2. “Betrayal”? What betrayal? Was there some political alliance that I am unaware of? Shall I recount the countless and severe and ugly ways in which the Israeli charedi political establishment has acted against the D”L tzibbur and their rabbis and yeshivas in the past?
3. Boycott? Really? Which side needs the other more? Which side is wealthier and more independent? Which side supports the other? How many D”L shnorrers have you seen in charedi neighborhoods? You want to ‘boycott’ some kids running some temporary stalls? Go ahead, big shot. But don’t be surprised if their parents then turn around and boycott you.
What a horrible idea? If the assumption that every DL supports their parties decision or even voted for that party. Many vote Likud, Marzal, Shas and Utj.
What about boycotting stores in Meah Shearim since their representatives beat up soldiers and throw rocks?
akuperma,
Your post proves that you know nothing about Israel. All you would have to do is go to Har Nof and see all the DL type selling to charedim. If Har Nof is too far away for you, just go to the local selling area in any neighborhood.
I think this boycott should be extended to not patronizing any mechanic, lawyer, accountant, electrician, pharmacist, dentist, banker, or doctor who is a DL or chiloni enemy. We should not patronize any store owned or staffed by these people, or buy products that were manufactured by these people. I think this will make a much larger statement than just not buying daled minim from DL.
#2- I have been to many ‘shuk arba minim’ throughout Israel. Many of the stalls are operated by D”Ls (many of them teens). I have seen a great many charedim at their stalls, and a great many D”Ls at charedi stalls. I never noticed that either community gravitated to stalls run by ‘their’ guys – everyone bought from everyone.
Awesome! Let’s help chareidim build up all their businesses. For a few reasons; firstly, while being so beaten by the daati leumi public, one must stick up for himself. The chareidi world has stood behind in chizuk to the daati leumi community many times. Weather it was during the disengagement etc. When it comes to chareidi needs the daati leumi klal are major kafoi tov and show no respect. Secondly, there is a notion in israel that the chareidi business aren’t as good or professional as anything daati or chiloni; which is such a lie. There are thriving business that are very professional but unfortunately for us to dig out 1,000,000 for an apt; then the chilonim and daatiim love us. When at the same time the suppliers and builders that are chareidi are having a hard time attracting even chareidi projects; run by chareidim.
If the israeli society wants to see chareidim do well then they’ve gotta gove them a chance and certainly the ones to give them a chance shud be their own people. I regret every minute of signing for my apt in yerushalayim; albeit a chareidi project but the contracts for developing and contents of everything are all with overcharged, crooked, daati leumi or chiloni companies. When we have the most beautiful chareidi stores tryint to buld themselves up. Why? Why? Why? Can’t we help our own first and support them.
Ok everybody, let’s all sing in unison now: “acheinu kol beis yiroel….”
Akuperma – it’s common knowledge that most of the vendors even in Charedi areas are not Charedi…
Are there Rabbonim behind it, i.e. does the Torah allow it?
Rash Hashana is still warm and here they are, lowlifes trying to hurt their fellow Jews. I don’t care a sniff of “tabik” what the reason is, but you bums are setting Moshiach back for at least another day. You’re a disgrace.
Lo sikom v’lo sitor.
Lo sisne es ochicho bilvovecho.
Rachmana Litzlan.
“The chareidi world has stood behind in chizuk to the daati leumi community many times.” – WAS I SLEEPING the last 40 years can you remind me of the chizuk? where and when?
This is a disgusting idea for boycotting any Jew and stop the labeling. We have become a society of labelers & we disqualify ‘tzalem elokim’ at every turn.
#8- “The chareidi world has stood behind in chizuk to the daati leumi community many times. Weather it was during the disengagement etc.”
Wow, what chutzpah! It was the charedi parties who voted FOR the disengagement, thereby destroying the homes, shuls, yeshivas, farms, businesses, cemeteries and complete communities of D”L, built over decades. When the D”Ls came to the charedi politicians – they were laughed at! When they turned to charedi gdolim – they were usually refused entrance! This is your idea of ‘chizuk’?! The mind boggles.
Ok, so if the DL kid doesnt make his 100 Sheckel, he just turns to his father the Dr or his mother the computer programer for the money. Real effective boycott.
Ezehu chacham haroe aet hanolad.
#8 and the Charedi world closed the doors on DL dayanim, Rabbanim and Kashrus supervisors.
Boy are we in a mess! Sound like PRE 1A fighting over marbles and BTW I know and #17 visited a few Charedi MD (Doctors)at Sharei Zedek hospital and my travel agent is a Charedi from HarNOf so hope that got the funds to pay for their kids starched shirts and $100shekel ties.
Boycott geniuses, who has the numbers and the money? Who collects Tzeddakah from whom? Our reputation for being smart people seems to be greatly exaggerated in some circles. How stupid can you be?
#16. Hit the nail on the head. The truth is, Chareidim don’t deserve DL support, if you believe in collective punishment, like some of you are advocating, you will lose big time if DL reciprocates and also, shame on you!
We are still in golus because of sinas chinum. You have demonstrated it clearly here. I have not seen one report from any source that DL’s are considering responding in kind. I guess we can see who the real Torah true Jews are…and it’s not you!
