Welfare Minister Meir Cohen and Finance Minister Yair Lapid have announced they are doubling prepaid shopping cards for the needy this year, allocating 10 million NIS. The cards contain 300 NIS each and those entitled may receive them from local city social work officials ahead of Yomtov.
The ministers feel the prepaid cards provide assistance without compelling the needy to stand on handout lines and endure the embarrassment of that arrangement.
In a somewhat related matter, Lapid on his Facebook page posted a message that no Holocaust survivors should be alone on Rosh Hashanah, turning to Israelis to make sure these people are invited to neighboring homes and not forgotten over the Yomtov season.
