About 60kg (132 lbs) of fresh fish was confiscated on Monday, 20 Elul 5773 after it was learned it was transported in a cardboard box, without refrigeration, on a bus from to Jerusalem. The person delivering the fish to the capital placed it in the luggage compartment of a bus on a hot summer day. The fish originated in the Kinneret in northern Israel.
Border police conducting a routine security inspection on the bus entering the capital were not pleased with the looks of the carton, deciding it must be opened. Inspectors arriving on the scene stated that without a doubt the fish were no longer in an edible state.
The bus driver, a 40-year-old Tiveria resident, was detained for questioning after it was determined that he was the smuggler, looking to make some extra money before Rosh Hashanah. He admitted that it was he who placed the carton of fish in the bus’ luggage compartment. The fish were taken to be destroyed.
EGGS IN YERUSHALAYIM
Last week authorities apprehended two 17-year-olds after changing the expiration date on tens of thousands of eggs that expired in 2010!
Police patrolling the area heard noise in an underground parking lot of a building in the Reches Shlomo area of Yerushalayim. The eggs already had quite the foul odor but the youths seeking to make some serious money were undeterred. They were taken into custody and the eggs destroyed.
BAD MEAT IN SERIOUS QUANTITIES
And in yet another case, 12,000 portions of inedible meat were confiscated in Gush Dan and Be’er Tuvia as they were heading to stores for retail sale. A standard inspection of the cargo on board a truck heading to Be’er Tuvia revealed the health hazard. Veterinary Services official Dr. Vadim Itzkowitz explains the meat was frozen but it did not have any identifying tags whatsoever. He added when it began to defrost the distinctive odor gave it away.
And a short time later, in a standard stop check of trucks making deliveries in the Gush Dan area, a vehicle transporting 4,000 portions of inedible meats was apprehended. Health officials simply stated the meat “was not fit for human consumption” without getting into details.
