The NY Times and the NY Post Post came to a conclusion that New Yorker would do a wiser choice of they elect Christine Quinn as the Democratic nominee and Joe Lhota as the Republican nominee in the race for mayor of the City of New York.
The NYT explained their endorsement of Quinn and Lhota in a late Saturday night editorial:
“Ms. Quinn, the City Council speaker, offers the judgment and record of achievement anyone should want in a mayor. Two opponents — Bill de Blasio, the public advocate, and William Thompson Jr., former comptroller — offer powerful arguments on their own behalf. But Ms. Quinn inspires the most confidence that she would be the right mayor for the inevitable times when hope and idealism collide with the challenge of getting something done.”
“Ms. Quinn has no specific plan to require the richest New Yorkers to pay more in taxes in service of important civic goals (she says she will raise taxes as a last resort), but neither has she made a long list of unrealistic promises. The biggest challenge has not been talked about much — next year the new mayor will have to confront a budget crisis with no money to spare and all those expired municipal contracts to settle. The mayor we will need then will not be the police reformer or education visionary, but a skilled and realistic negotiator.
The NYT also endorsed Joseph Lhota as the Republican choice for mayor:
“Mr. Lhota is more than the sum of his years as Mr. Giuliani’s top deputy, and he is the best qualified of the three men seeking the Republican nomination for mayor. Few people know better than Mr. Lhota how city government works. He was an expert budget director for Mr. Giuliani, and then became deputy mayor for operations.
“Mr. Lhota, son of a New York City cop, is not a glad-handing pol, but a practical and efficient one…
On Monday, the NY Post, more acceptable to GOP voters, also endorsed the idea of a Quinn vs lhota match-up in the general.
“New York today is far and away the greatest city in the world, but we can very easily slide back into the abyss. Many of the candidates in this race would have you take for granted the gains of the past two decades — they say we can strip the police of their powers, give giant raises to the municipal unions, and tax our way to utopia,” the Post writes of the critical choice NY voters are faced with.
“For the Democrats, we believe Christine Quinn is the only candidate who has shown the basic common sense any mayor needs. On the Republican side, Joe Lhota’s record of achievement and solid ideas on tough issues offer the best chance for an accountable and effective government.
“We need to end the silly season of the mayoral campaign and get down to a vigorous race between Christine Quinn and Joe Lhota so New Yorkers can hear two competing visions of what the future will be.”

I am very shocked that the Conservative New York Post endorsed Christine Quinn when she is what we would call a man an open Mishkav Zachor. I also can’t believe that the New York Times endorsed her when she took away our right to vote when she voted to extend Term Limits when the voters defeated it not once but twice. I hope the voters are smarter than that & vote for another candidate instead.
Eli,
Christine Quinn is the most conservative of all electible Democrats in the mayoral race. The others are extreme liberals.
“Christine Quinn when she is what we would call a man an open Mishkav Zachor”
By writing that you’ve proven yourself an am haaretz. Mishkav zachor applies only to men. And there is absolutely no prohibition for a non-Jewish woman to be with another non-Jewish woman, either Torah or Rabbinic. Spend more time in the beit midrash and less on the internet!
“Christine Quinn is the most conservative of all electible Democrats in the mayoral race.”
And I will be voting for her on September 10.
