It was a difficult scene for border police and IDF soldiers operating in Shomron during the night. A border police force was operating in PA-occupied Kalandia when it found itself under attack by an estimated 1,500 residents. A nearby IDF force came to provide backup for the border police unit. After riot-control means failed to distance the crowd, the soldiers were instructed to fire at the lower extremities of rioters when necessary. According to PA (Palestinian Authority) reports, two people were killed and 15 injured. Later in the morning, PA sources reported one of the injured died.

PA officials deny the IDF report, stating the soldiers were not fighting off rioters but they simply came to arrest a suspect who was recently released from an Israeli prison.

PA officials announced on Monday that as a result of the shooting incident they are canceling the planned meeting with Israeli negotiators in Jericho set for later in the day.
