Brooklyn DA – Ken Thompson to YWN: I’ll Treat Every Community Fairly and Equally

20130818-205145.jpgThe race for Brooklyn DA is heating up. Charles Hynes, the incumbent Brooklyn District Attorney for the past 23 years is ratcheting up support among the rank and file in the Orthodox Jewish community, while Ken Thompson is being embraced by community activists seeking change.

Last week, the campaign of Mr. Thompson undertook a Jewish outreach campaign with massive ad buys in all of the local papers, Jewish websites and daily newsletters. As part of that outreach, Mr. Thompson embarked on a 1-day visit, Sunday afternoon, to the Catskills accompanied by community leaders of the Satmar community in Williamsburg.

Mr. Thompson visited Kutchers, the Krula Rebbe and attended a Hachnosas Sefer Torah celebration at the Raleigh hotel in South Fallsburg.

Speaking to YWN, Mr. Thompson clarified his comment on NY1, saying he was referring to the NY Times report that certain defendants within the community who were treated differently in certain abuse cases. “Mr. Hynes said some horrible things about the Jewish community. He called them Mafia and vigilantes. What I said is what I mean, Mr. Thompson told YWN. “I will make sure that every community will be treated fairly and that everyone in Brooklyn is treated equally.”
Pointing to his upbringing, Mr. Thompson said he understands the importance of equality and the needs of the Orthodox Jewish community.

Mr. Thompson said that his visit to the Catskills indicates his intention to aggressively seek the support of the Orthodox Jewish community in the coming weeks, until the primaries on September 10th. “I want to meet with voters in the community, sit down with them, look them in the eye and explain them my vision for equal justice,” he said. Adding, “After 23 of Mr. Hynes, Brooklyn needs a new DA.”

  1. Why is Thompson wearing a yarmulka in the above picture? Is he converting to Judaism or something or is he simply being patronizing?

  2. If Mr. Hynes said the same thing, we’ld know he was lying. Do you prefer a bigot who has targetted hasidic Jews for being fanatics, or a bigot who would target all non-African Americans (but perhaps treat all non-Blacks equally).

  3. heretohelp #6: GW Bush never put on a kapul for media interviews or anytime he bumped into a Jew. The above guy is just patronizing. Since when do we need gentiles donning a kapul when they meet us?

  4. Ben Torah, don’t get so bent outta shape, I don’t find thompson’s yarmulka any more offensive than hikind’s purim black face, just a silly prop.

  5. Based on the news Hynes had no problem with cover up outside of the Jewish Community, to show off he attacked the Jewish Community

  6. What he means by “treat fairly” is the continued sheltering of abusers and the like..just as his predecesor did.

  7. Too little, too late.

Fact: Ken Thompson indicated that orthodox-Jews receive preferable treatment when in fact a recent juror declared that orthodox-Jewish suspects can’t get a fair trial in Brooklyn.

Fact: Ken Thompson teamed up with Abe George to defeat Joe Hynes and made his campaign centrepiece to fight the “special treatment of pedophiles in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community”.

Fact: Nydia Velazquez endorsed Thompson because “we’ve seen the powerful protected because of political connections, but with Ken Thompson as our district attorney, everyone will be held to the same standard.”

Fact: Charles Hynes called us names but never singled out our community with a claim to superiority (a claim that anti-Semites have made for centuries).

Fact: Charles Hynes began targeting our community only after the media (who supports Ken Thompson) and his opponents made claims of preferential treatment.
