Israel began its A3 automated speed camera program in 2012. Since that time it has been determined that the busiest camera issued 2,532 speeding tickets in 2012, averaging over 80 a day. This busy camera is located on the Coastal Road, Route 2, two kilometers (1.2 miles) after the Olga gas station heading south.
The second busiest camera is located in Yerushalayim, on Derech Hebron at HaTenufa Junction. That camera issues a monthly average of 1,400 summonses. In third place is the speed camera on Route 70 north Shefiya Junction heading west, issuing 1,293 summonses a month.
The head of Israel Police Research & Development Alex Pearlman insists the installation of the speed cameras was never about money. He explains it is about road safety and apprehending offenders and it was never about seeking a way to increase revenue. Pearlman adds the nation’s automated speed cameras are vital towards persuading drivers to slow it down. He adds that 90% of the tickets issued were for motorists traveling at least 21 KPH over the speed limit in an urban setting or 26 KPH over the limit in a highway setting.
