An out-of-control SUV flipped and crashed into the side of a home in Brooklyn Thursday evening, killing the driver, police said.
The 61-year-old driver, Phil Mendola, who lived near the crash scene in Sea Gate, died after crashing his SUV into a driveway between two homes on Surf Avenue, police sources confirmed.
His 59-year-old friend was also in the car. She’s in the hospital with injuries, police said.
Police are investigating what caused Mendola’s vehicle to swerve and go airborne before flipping over and crashing.
Witnesses said the vehicle left a park and was speeding down the street when it veered sharply to the left to avoid hitting a pedestrian. The car traveled up the front stairs of a home, went airborne and flipped over, they said.
Surf Avenue was closed between Mermaid Avenue and Beach 38th Street.
