Brooklyn DA – Thompson Hits Hynes’ Incompetence For Cop-Killer Bail Release

da hynes.jpgAn alleged cop-killer who faces life in prison was freed without bail this week because the Brooklyn DA prosecutors failed to start his trial fast enough, the NY Post reports. Pablo Negron, 24, was released for bail after two years Tuesday when a Brooklyn Supreme Court judge ruled that prosecutors had exceeded the time limit to bring their attempted-murder case against him. He will now be free to roam the streets until at least the start of his trial Sept. 23.

Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes’ prosecutors were legally able to extend his jail time as they prepared for trial, the Post reports, but the judge finally ruled that they had run up 129 days of “unexcused’’ delay.

“Because the people have not been ready for trial within 90 days from the commencement of his commitment to custody, the defendant’s motion for release . . . is granted,” Judge Ann Donnelly ruled.

“The DA dropped the ball,” a court source told the Post. “The judge was not happy to do it. She wanted him in.”

In a press release Thursday morning, former federal prosecutor and Brooklyn DA candidate Ken Thompson blasted Hynes’ incompetence that led to the release of a defendant facing life in prison.

“Because of D.A. Hynes’ gross incompetence, a potential cop killer – with a history of attacking police officers – is now a free man, said Mr. Thompson. “That is unconscionable. The people of Brooklyn, and the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect us deserve better than this. Under my watch, violent criminals will not be free to walk the streets as a result of technicalities or ineptitude.”
