Last week construction resumed to replace an old water main pipe in the ancient cemetery near the tziyun of Rav Nachman of Breslov in Uman. Avreichim protested the work for fear the digging would compromise the integrity of kevarim in the cemetery.
According to Rav Shimon Buskila, who is the director of the World Breslov Organization, he phoned the mayor of Uman to discuss the issue and the order was given to halt the construction. Engineers found a way to execute the required work without disturbing the cemetery.
Buskila adds that a number of dump trucks containing earth were ordered in line with instructions from poskim to cover the exposed area to make certain no bones were exposed. It is pointed out the area in question is property owned by the World Breslov Organization. The ancient cemetery was used by the Jews of Uman during the early part of the 19th Century. In addition to the thousands of Jews buried in the cemetery, there are the remains of 30,000 Jews slaughtered in Uman HY”D in 1768.
