In his motzei Shabbos Nachamu drasha, Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita apologized and issued a clarification regarding his position on the dati leumi tzibur. The rav referred to remarks made a week earlier by Rosh Yeshivat Shalom Cohen Shlita, at which time the rosh yeshiva referred to the dati leumi tzibur as “Amalek”.
The Gadol Hador elaborated by explaining he has no doubt that Rav Cohen’s remarks against the dati leumi community were referring only to those who have chosen to align themselves with people in the coalition who remain determined to uproot Torah. “I too am witness regarding the man and he was referring to politicians” added Rav Ovadia.
Rav Ovadia explained that in his younger and healthier days he frequently visited hesder yeshivot to give shiurim as his son Rav Yitzchak continues doing today, and he loves all Jews, among which are counted the dati leumi community. He explained the remainder of the dati leumi community is beloved to him as is all of Klall Yisrael.
HaGaon HaRav Chaim Druckman stated Rav Ovadia did the correct thing for the words uttered by Rav Cohen were quite harsh. “No Jew is Amalek” added Rav Druckman, “especially ministers and MKs who are moser nefesh on behalf of Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael.”

Where is there stated a mitzva to be “moser nefesh on behalf of…Eretz Yisrael”?

Druckman is wrong. Chacham Ovadia shlita clarified that the Ministers and MKs of the daati party ARE Amaleikim, as are those that support those Ministers and MKs. It is only the daati tzibur that opposes their party that are free of the yoke of that label.

I wonder if army service was only 6 months, would Yeshiva Bochurs serve. How about 3 months? 1 month? 1 day? I thought so. I am positive that there IS a Mitzva of Al Taamod Al Dam Reacha. (or is that just in theory?)
