Following reports that SUNY plans to shutter Long Island College Hospital (LICH) this weekend, Council Member Stephen Levin is calling on SUNY to cease and desist and follow court orders that prevent them from doing so. Reports from LICH say that doctors and nurses are being told that equipment will be taken out of the hospital, patients will be transferred, and that the last day for surgery is tomorrow.
“SUNY is not above the law,” Levin said. “If they attempt to shutter Long Island College Hospital this weekend, as reports show, they will be doing so illegally. The community will not allow this.”
“If they refuse to abide by the previous court orders of Judge Johnny Lee Baynes of Brooklyn, then the courts must intervene and issue a new temporary restraining order that prevents SUNY from shuttering Long Island College Hospital.”
“Long Island College Hospital provides needed care for the communities of Brooklyn, and SUNY’s attempts to shut down LICH have already created ripple effects throughout the borough’s health care system. As a community, we cannot allow SUNY to follow through with their illegal actions.”
