Over a thousand people gathered in Manhattan’s Union Square to protest the Florida verdict acquitting George Zimmerman in the death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.
The protesters chanted “Justice for Trayvon Martin” and “No Justice, No Peace.” One held a sign that said “Trayvon is my son, daughter, brother, father, uncle.”
Danette Chavis, who said she lost her 19-year-old son to a police shooting in 2004, said the verdict “sends a signal to White America that this is acceptable.”
Afterward, hundreds of mostly peaceful protesters blocked traffic Sunday night as they marched to Times Square where they staged a mass sit-in.
Since the verdict, protests have broken out around the country. The case unleashed debate in the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice.

The protesters didn’t want a real trial. They wanted a show trial.
This protest is 2% of nothing. 4 weeks there was a protest of 50.000 chasidim in downtown Manhattan Foley square and the people here wrote that it was nothing so 1.000 is 2% of it.
What wonders me is how come that the media covers this protest much more then the one that had 50 times more people?
Peaceful protest is ok that is what we are about
A peaceful protest is a relief, but I don’t get what they are protesting. Do they want justice? They got it! There was a trial by jury, and the prosecution was unable to prove their case adequately. This is justice in its purest sense.
Do they want revenge? Oh, that’s another thing. Justice does not equal revenge.
Only when it’s puerto rican shooting black, they protest. When it’s black shooting everyone else, they are quiet, and don’t say a word. Typical.
the person who said that “Trayvon is my son, daughter, brother, father, uncle”. was saying the truth, they’re all thugs.
That’s what we should have done when the verdict came out on Rubashkin. When a Jew gets a ridiculous verdict no one cares. If the kid that was killed was a Jewish Kid no one would care.
