New Jersey: Several Jewish Campers Injured In Bus Accident In Old Tappan

amb.jpgSeveral students and one adult suffered injuries on Monday afternoon when a school bus collided with a pickup truck in Old Tappan.

The accident happened at the corner of Orangeburg Road and Zotti Avenue after the bus picked up students from Camp Shalom, a Jewish day camp, said Old Tappan Police Chief Thomas Shine.

“It’s unclear what the driver’s maneuver was going to be and the school bus rear ended the pickup truck,” said Shine.

Forty-three students, ages ranging from 4 through 12, were removed from the bus and were checked out on a nearby front lawn.

Six students suffered minor injuries and were taken by stretchers as a precaution, said Shine. Four students were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center and two were transported to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

“There was no serious injuries to the juveniles,” he said.

The driver of the pickup truck, who was unidentified, suffered moderate injuries, said Shine, and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center. The bus driver suffered no injuries.

Uninjured students were transferred to another bus with the help of camp counselors, or released directly to their parents, Shine.

Gina Marksburg, a resident of Orangeburg Road, said that she was prompted to come outside when she heard sirens and helicopters overhead.

“It’s a pretty busy street,” she said. “It’s a quiet neighborhood but there’s a lot of traffic here.”

Another resident, Will Walsh, said the driver was one of his neighbors, and believes he had been trying to turn into his driveway.
