A decision has been made to remove a section of the Astrotower in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
As YWN reported on Wednesday, Emergency personnel were called to Astroland in Coney Island, after the “Astro-Tower” started swaying in the wind.
New York’s Office of Emergency Management says engineers made the decision to take apart a small portion of the 275-foot-tall tower after it continued to sway high in the air Wednesday.
The swaying forced an evacuation of Luna Park amusement park Tuesday, and the evacuation order was still in effect as engineers and inspectors continued to assess the wobbly 275-foot-tall tower.
The Cyclone, Luna Park, and Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park remain closed until further notice. The Coney Island Boardwalk is closed between West 10th Street and West 12th Street. Coney Island Beach, the Scream Zone at Luna Park, the Coney Island Raceway and the B&B Carrousel are currently open to the public and are under normal operation.
On July 4th, Coney Island will host the 98th Annual International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Nathan’s Famous, and free fireworks at night.
