1:53PM EDT (Al Jazeera): Gehad ElHaddad, a spokesperson for the Muslim Brotherhood and senior adviser to Freedom & Justice Party, has told Al Jazeera that ‘a full military coup is underway.’ Haddad said ‘tanks are on the move around the outskirts of Cairo’ and that ‘some high ranking members of the Brotherhood have been arrested.’ Haddad told Al Jazeera and that communication with President Morsi has been cut off so he cannot confirm or deny if he was moved from the Republican Guard HQ.

1:00P EDT: Mada Masr, a news site in Egypt, reports on Twitter that army tanks have arrived in downtown Cairo, in the vicinity of Tahrir Square.

12:50PM EDT: Jeremy Bowen, the BBC’s Middle East editor, just reported on Twitter that troops in armored vehicles had arrived at Cairo University, where there were deadly clashes early Wednesday between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi.

12:45PM EDT: Mohamed Morsi held his ground in a statement released via the Facebook account of the presidential spokesman earlier on Wednesday, shortly after an army-imposed deadline for him to reconcile with his political foes or resign passed, saying that he remained the legitimate and democratically elected president of Egypt.

“The presidency reaffirms that violating constitutional legitimacy threatens democratic practice by veering off the right track and threatens the freedom of expression that Egypt has lived since the revolution,” the statement said.

10:44AM EDT: An hour before the deadline expired, the mood remained defiant in Cairo’s Nasr City district, with Morsi’s supporters insisting they would defend the president.

“We are the constitution, we are freedom, we are legitimacy, we are the revolution,” said Essam el-Erian, a senior member of the Brotherhood, at a press conference.

9:23AM EDT (Reuters): Egyptian troops with armoured vehicles have secured the central Cairo studios of state television on Wednesday, security sources have said.

As a deadline approaches when the army high command is expected to step in and reorder Egypt’s political institutions, the sources said staff not involved in working on live broadcasts had left the building.
