MDA Team Revives IDF K9 Soldier

mdanSoldiers of the IDF’s Oketz K9 unit were a bit panicked when a four-legged team member collapsed during a training exercise on Tuesday, 17 Tammuz 5773, apparently from the oppressive heat.

When MDA paramedic Tzuri Navot was instructed earlier in the week to prepare to take part in a training exercise along with IDF soldiers, he never envisioned being summoned to revive a dog, but that is just what he did. EMT Tal Toledano, who was transporting a soldier with simulated injuries headed to the call with Navot and when they arrived they immediately realized the K9 was suffering from the extreme ambient temperature. The animal was panting rapidly and shaking uncontrollably they report. They started intravenous therapy while others poured water on the dog, and yet other petted him while speaking to the K9, telling him “it will be okay”.

Toledano said the treatment in this case is the same for dogs and people, but the former bounce back quicker he added. The patient responded rapidly and did not require hospitalization. The handlers and other soldiers were extremely thankful for the quick and effective care.

Navot says he owns a dog, but both of them admit this was the first time they delivered emergency medical care to a dog. They added that for them, it was like treating another soldier and they were thankful they were able to provide assistance during the time of need.

  1. 1. Trained dogs are very expensive. Why don’t they have a vet on call?

    2. Why were they training on a fast day (rhetorical question, the IDF doesn’t hold by fast days, and soldiers who observe them are subject to harassment). In a Jewish state they would not hold training on fast days (since unlike military operations, training exercises can be postponed without risk or loss).

  2. akuperma – you are dead wrong. My son who served in Hesder, did not do any training whatsoever on any of the fast days.

  3. akuperma you must live on a different planet then the rest of us otherwise I can’t explain why you would slander the IDF constantly with statements not based in fact.

The IDF respects fast days and has very clear regulations about them, no soldier observing a fast will be harassed, and if it does happen the harasser will be subject to disciplinary action.

It goes even further there is a legendary story about a platoon of hesder students who came up with a fast to avoid a day of exercises their bad luck had their Rosh Yeshiva visiting that day who was very surprised to hear from the CO about the fast that day…

In general you are right about exercises, and in general the IDF does not hold them on fast days, but you and I can’t judge the necessity from our living room, the most recent exercises were held in the Golan and serve double purposes.

Other then that the event was published about yesterday but happened last week according to the reports.

But that’s just stinky facts much more fun to say the IDF is bad…
