Interior Minister Saar Visits Ponevezh & Meets with Rav Shteinman Shlita

shteinMinister of the Interior (Likud) Gideon Saar on Thursday 12 Tammuz 5773 visited Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. The minister also met with Maran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita.

The minister arrived during the morning hours, first meeting with senior city officials in the mayor’s office to obtain a report on the state of affairs on a local level. From there the minister was escorted to the yeshiva, where the minister was a guest of HaGaon HaRav Kahanaman Shlita. Saar was taken around by Mayor Rubinstein and MK (Yahadut Hatorah) Asher. The minister spoke with talmidim and took part in their learning, after which he asked for a Sefer Tehillim and he read from it for a period of time near the Aaron Kodesh.

Saar told reporters he regularly studies mussar seforim like חובת הלבבות and מסילת ישרים because they teach proper midos.

Kikar Shabbat reports Rav Shteinman called on the minister, citing that in the former government he was good to the chareidim in his capacity as minister of education and he hopes for the same today. He called on the minister to do good once again in the face of those seeking to harm yeshivos. The minister is reported to have told the Gadol Hador that he will do everything in his power to assist the chareidim.

  1. The Real Politics behind the meeting are critical. Likud is a big loser if Lapid manages to cause the hareidim to seek new allies. Until this year, almost all Shomer Shabbos Jews were “natural allies” of Likud. If the Hareidim are seeking allies to end conscription (the easiest way to solve the current crisis), they are likely to create a new reality in Israeli politics that leaves Likud worse off.
