VIDEO: Streisand on Kol Isha, Women of the Wall and Mehadrin Buses

egednnVisiting acclaimed celebrity Barbra Streisand is among the dignitaries who arrived in Israel to attend the gala 90th birthday party for President Shimon Peres. On her first day in Israel, Monday, 9 Tammuz 5773, Streisand was quite busy, meeting with President Shimon Peres and then attending a ceremony at Hebrew University in which she was given an honorary doctorate of philosophy. Streisand is a long time supporters of the school and has donated a building in the memory of her late father. This is her first visit to Israel since the 1984 building dedication.

During her address she praised Hebrew University, expressing her hope that other would mimic the non-discriminatory policies of the school in which Jews, Arabs, Christians and Muslims sit at one another’s side in class, all dreaming of a better tomorrow.

“So it’s distressing to read about women in Israel being forced to sit in the back of the bus or when we hear about Women of the Wall having metal chairs thrown at them when they attempt to peacefully and legally pray, or when women are banned from singing at public ceremonies…”

  1. As a former student of Yeshiva of Brooklyn she should know better. She is not a student that they are proud of.

  2. A “Frum” Website, providing a video of a lady exposing her elbows while she publicly questions basic Halacha??

Ah, the usual day at YWN! I guess you guys ran out of the usual “new”? Chasidish Rebbeim making kiddush or marrying off grandchildren? Or the Shidduch crisis finally solved?

    This is news??? Security!!

  3. She, like so many others with a limited background and a largely non-Jewish lifestyle, can’t seem to understand Jewish Torah observance, and try to justify their lack of its pursuit by condemning the carefully selected ideas, concepts, and expressions their non-Jewish values can’t reconcile. She might try dressing modestly and going to speak with Gedolei Yisrael about her concerns rather than hyping herself in the media.

  4. Why is this a news item on a yeshiva news site? Who’s running this site anyways? Newsmax? And why is a video of the event needed?

  5. To No. 2: You are anatomically incorrect. Her elbows are covered but one shoulder is not.

And to the YWN editors: would you please not use the word “dignitary” in a way that includes “celebrity.” There may be some undignified dignitaries, but surely one does not become a dignitary by being a celebrity. Dignitaries are heads of state, heads of governments, ambassadors, and major cabinet ministers. Celebrities, as someone said in the last 50 years or so, are persons who are famous only for being famous.

Is your Yiddishkeit so Shallow, that hearing another opinion might damage your beliefs.

It so happens that she did go to talk many Rabbonim with her questions, but she came away with vague answers.

  7. Yeshivah of brooklyn is noted for and should be praised for turning down Her million dollar donation when she wanted her name on the building, she’s definitly not a good example for bais yaakov girls

  8. You may not like her music but she is definitely a “dignitary” and deserves the kavod she received today at the program in honor of President Peres. She has helped to raise millions of dollars over the years for mosdos in EY and has been a strong-supporter of just about every policy issue supported by the Israeli government. May hashem grant the request she made in the kvitlach she left today at the kosel.

  9. NuYork:
Actualy, her background is not limited as you hink. unfortunately, she was frum and chose to rebel.

    Gadolhadorah:
as usual you completely miss the point. a dignitary is a person considered to be important because of high rank or office. Even the biggest baal tzedoko in the world doesnt become a dignitary for it.
