An investigation conducted by the State Antitrust Authority in connection with allegations dating back to price fixing of bread in chareidi neighborhoods in 2010 has led to a plea bargain agreement among the defendants and the state authority.
Senior officials affiliated with Berman’s, Angel’s, Merchavit, Davidowitz and Deganit Bakeries admitted to setting prices on bread sold in grocery stores in chareidi communities including Bnei Brak and Yerushalayim. They made certain to eliminate competition by keeping the price of bread up in those areas at the expense of the families.
They admitted to the charges of price fixing along with collaborating regarding price increases on standard loaves of bread which are supposed to be governed by the state. A senior Berman’s Bakery employee was sentenced to six months community service and a 50,000 NIS fine.
