It was clear to most that after the Amar Bill was passed by the Ministerial Legislative Committee it was going to be vetoed along the way. The Movement party did not disappoint, doing just that.
MK Meir Sheetrit announced the veto, which now blocks the bill which would permit Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Moshe Amar to run for a second term. The Movement leader Justice Minister Tzipi Livni has explained that she will not permit personal bills, such as the Amar Bill which was aimed at advancing one individual. If The Movement does not back down from its veto, it is less unlikely the bill will pass.
From the chareidi perspective, the fear is the defeat of the Amar Bill will result in the election of two chief rabbis, both affiliated with the dati leumi tzibur.
