About a month after being removed as the leader of the Shas party, Eli Yishai broke his self-imposed media ban. On Tuesday evening the eve of 20 Sivan 5773, Yishai granted an interview with Channel 2 TV News’ Sivan Rahav Meir.
When asked about the difficulties of his sharp drop in status, from a senior cabinet minister and party leader to an opposition MK, Yishai explained “I wasn’t born with the titles”. He acknowledged that yes, it is quite difficult, but he is making the adjustment, one that permits him to spend more time with his wife and children. Yishai added that the various posts that he has held are not the goal, but simply a means to accomplish a goal, which he views as serving the tzibur at large.
Yishai admits that being removed as Shas leader is difficult, but he knows it is not just him and anyone in his position would be having a hard time, as he admits he is having as he adjusts to the transition.
When asked about his connection with Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, Yishai added that his love for the rav is unconditional and he is confident their relationship will continue.
Regarding rumors of his bid in the upcoming Jerusalem mayoral race, Yishai stated it is not relevant at present but he did not rule out the possibility at some time in the future.
When asked to comment on current Shas leader Aryeh Deri, Yishai wished his successor bracha v’hatzlacha.
