Democratic mayoral hopeful John Liu got yesterday a big boost for his so far sluggish campaign. District Council 37, which has 121,000 members, put its weight behind Liu. The move, indicates how volatile the race is at this point.
DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts said in a statement that her union would endorse the candidate most committed to “neglected communities and the public workers that serve them.”
When reached last night by Politcker, Mr. Liu reacted positively to the endorsement. “Yay!” he exclaimed. “I think that’s great.”
Doug Muzzio, politics professor at Baruch College, called the backing of the 121,000-member union “a clear boost for Liu.”
At a news conference on the steps of City hall Wednesday morning, DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts said, “DC 37 members and all New Yorkers face a critical mayoral election this November, which could bring a truly great mayor who will end the current favoritism toward the wealthy 1% and restore government ‘for the people’– the poor and working-class people of New York City. With last night’s vote by our Delegates, DC 37 officially endorsed New York City Comptroller John Liu as the candidate best qualified to be that mayor.”
In 2012, DC 37 endorsed Councilman Charles Barron for Congress over Hakeem Jeffries. In a race where every vote is in play, today’s endorsement doesn’t help Mr. Liu boost his credentials in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community.

Having had personal dealings with the corrupt DC37, having DC37 endorse John Liu is a powerful reason why not to support John Liu!
Liu was on my short list of possible candidates. Now he is off of that list.
