Kalfa Pulls Bill: Rav Amar/Rav Ariel Deal Unlikely at This Time

craAfter weeks of back and forth accompanied by Israel’s best political deal-making, it now appears the agreement reached between the Shas and Bayit Yehudi parties surrounding the election for chief rabbis will not pass as hoped.

After much back room dealing the agreement came from Shas, clearing the way for MK (Bayit Yehudi) Zevulun Kalfa to move ahead with his bill. The bill seeks to permit Rav Amar Shlita to run for a second term as well as lifting the age ceiling of 70 for a candidate to permit Rav Ariel Shlita to run for the post of Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi.

Kalfa on Sunday realized that at present, The Movement, Yesh Atid and Yisrael Beitenu parties plan to oppose the bill. Therefore, it does not have a chance of passing, leading to his decision to pull the bill.

Therefore, at least for now, there is no deal on the table so it appears the two mentioned, the incumbent Sephardi Chief Rabbi and the Chief Rabbi of Ramat Gan will not be contenders in the race for Israel’s next chief rabbis.
