Four major transit agencies in New York and New Jersey will receive $3.7 billion in federal aid to repair damage from Superstorm Sandy. The money also will help protect the region’s trains, buses and subways from future storms.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the additional disaster relief funds on Thursday.

About $1.3 billion of that will be funneled into resiliency projects that could include elevating storm drains or installing back-up power sources.

The money will be distributed to New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority; the New York City Department of Transportation; New Jersey Transit; and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

It’s being allocated by the Federal Transit Administration’s Emergency Relief Program.
