IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz has been spending a bit of time visiting the Golan Heights, getting a firsthand look at the situation along the border with Syria. The military commander made such a visit on Tuesday, 12 Sivan 5773 following the third cross-border shooting incident this week. A military vehicle was hit by gunfire in that incident, which the Syrian army announced was intentional. B’chasdei Hashem there were no fatalities or injuries.
Nevertheless, Gantz is trying to prevent the beating of war drums. He announced that he does not believe that the Golan Heights border will become an active border for anti-Israel terrorism. However, Gantz did state that Israel will not tolerate cross-border fire of any kind, adding a warning to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that if the situation continues to deteriorate, Syria will have to live with the consequences.
Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on Tuesday stressed that Israel remains uninvolved in the civil war in Syria, then backing up the military commander with a statement that Israel will not tolerate any gunfire across the border.
