54,000 eggs smuggled into “Israel proper” from PA (Palestinian Authority) areas were discovered by border police operating near Beit Haninah in the capital. A truck that claimed to be carrying dirt was smuggling the eggs, which were detected during an inspection.
The driver and occupant aroused the suspicion of police at the checkpoint, who decided to pull the truck over for a more comprehensive look at the cargo. The two began running but were quickly apprehended. The eggs were found between a double wall, in a non-refrigerated environment while ambient temperatures soared.
Authorities report the eggs had a forged inspection/approval stamp from a northern area distributer so consumers would have no way of knowing they pose a health risk.
In a related matter, two persons found guilty of smuggling eggs into “Israel proper” appeared before the Tel Aviv Magistrate Court. The suspects, residents of Ariel and Netanya, were fined 16,000 NIS.
