Bayit Yehudi Gives Shas an Ultimatum in Chief Rabbinate Race

amarBayit Yehudi has given Shas party leaders an ultimatum regarding deals pertaining to the election for new chief rabbis, the daily Maariv reports. Maariv reported on Wednesday 14 Iyar 5773 that the dati leumi party is tired of waiting and has given Shas a deadline of the coming days to respond regarding the Ariel Bill, referring to amending the law to permit a candidate for chief rabbi over 70-years-old to enter the race.

Bayit Yehudi officials explain that if Shas does not signal it will support the bill, the dati leumi party will not support the so-called Amar Bill, clearing the way for Rishon L’tzion HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shlomo Amar to run for a second term. In addition, if that is the case, the dati leumi party will announce a candidate for Sephardi chief rabbi.

A Bayit Yehudi source is quoted as saying “we cannot wait for Shas forever. Our constituents want to know which candidate we are supporting.”

  1. Nu so is it a deal, or not?
SHAS you ignored Bennet when he wanted to partner with you and now you are playing hard to get….it will not end well unless you decide one way or other.

  2. #1 You’re just mimicking the baloney of the media. Maariv had reported several weeks after elections that Bennet had already agreed to be partner with Lapid 3 weeks before he even approached Shas. These 2 reshaim knew quite well that there’s no way Shas will agree to Bennet’s proposal on conscription.

  3. I am confused. I have read numerous articles on the Chief Rabbi issue AND not one ever discussed the gadlus of these Chief Rabbi candidates.

    Am I missing something?
