10:20AM EST: As was reported earlier, police were initially investigating whether the incident could have been a terror attack, but later assessments pointed at a failure in the truck’s brakes.
“At this moment in time we don’t believe it was a terror attack,” Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told The Times of Israel. ”We strongly believe it was an accident based on findings at the scene and eyewitnesses.”
The Palestinian driver of the truck was being questioned in order to ascertain whether it was a deliberate attack. He was lightly hurt in the collision.
UPDATE 10:00AM EST: As the tragic story from Haifa continues to unfold, with at least seven dead, and many injured in a horrific crash, police are not ruling out a possible terror attack.
According to Channel 2, Israeli Police are investigating the incident, and not ruling out that the driver of the truck intentionally hit the cars and pedestrians intentionally.
The truck struck eight vehicles, many of them crushed and overturned, and some catching on fire.
UPDATE 9:45AM EST: The death toll has been placed at seven (lowered from ten published earlier) in a vehicle crash which took place on the Bar Yehuda road in Haifa. According to reports, a truck slammed into several vehicles.
Magen David Adom has declared a mass casualty event, and dozens of ambulances are on the scene treating the victims.
There are 15 others injured, some critically.
FIRST REPORT 9:30AM EST: According to initial reports, a truck has struck numerous vehicles on Bar Yehuda in Haifa, killing at leats seven people, and injuring many others.
A large response of MDA, Hatzolah, Police and other emergency personnel are on the scene.
