The following statement was given to YWN by NYS Assemblywoman Rhoda Jacobs following the devastating fire at Rabbi Ashkenazi’s Shul (Horodenka) on Thursday morning.
“While I am deeply saddened to learn of the fire that devastated the Congregation Dvar Moshe of Horodenke Synagogue, thanks to the fire department’s rapid response, there were no injuries, and Rebbetzin Ashkenazi, who was there at the time of the fire, was taken to safety. I would like to thank the team of fire fighters from Ladder 157, Engine 225, who not only risk their lives for our community on a daily basis, but who went above and beyond by saving several of the synagogue’s Torahs.
The fine men of Ladder 157 are truly deserving of our praise and recognition for their bravery day in and day out. May the Torahs you heroically salvaged give Congregation Dvar Moshe of Horodenke strength as they rebuild in the coming months.
To Rabbi Ashkenazi and your congregation, it is a difficult and sorrowful time, but the Flatbush community is with you; my office and our staff are with you. I offer you my prayers and continued support during this distressing time.”
