The New York Police Department’s new top uniformed officer says the community and police must work together to keep the city safe.
Philip Banks III was named the chief of department this week at the nation’s largest police force. He replaces Joseph Esposito, who retired after more than a decade in the post.
Banks was previously in charge of the department’s community affairs bureau.
He said he opposes a proposal to create an inspector general. He believes many street stops are effective when done correctly.
Banks says he wants to continue to drive crime down in his new position. He says the community must help with that mission.
