Worker Trapped in Mud 75 Feet Beneath MTA Site Rescued After 4 Hours

fdnyRescuers worked for hours to free a construction worker trapped in mud and debris 75 feet below ground at the Second Avenue subway line construction site in upper Manhattan early Wednesday.

The worker became stuck in mud up to his chest at Second Avenue and East 95th Street around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was pulled to safety around 12:30 a.m.

The victim, an on-site supervisor, was reportedly stuck in a substance called slurry, a mix of of water and concrete. He had apparently gotten his foot stuck in some plywood, and that’s when the material began pouring on top of him.

More than 150 firefighters were eventually able to pull the man from all the hardening slurry. Fire Chief Donald Hayde called it one of the most intricate rescues he’s seen in years.
