One of the terrorists released in the Shalit prisoner exchange was Hamas terrorist Iman Ismail Salamah Sharavana, who is now imprisoned in Israel again and hunger striking. He was arrested following a 2002 terror attack in Beersheva in which a bomb injured 18 people. He was also connected to an attempted abduction and shooting attack against IDF soldiers.
Sharavana was sentenced to 38 years imprisonment but was among the terrorists released by Israel in the deal that resulted in Hamas releasing IDF soldier Sgt. Gilad Shalit. Shortly after his release he was found in PA (Palestinian Authority) autonomous areas in Yehuda and Shomron, a violation of the terms of his release. He was taken into custody again and a request was filed to invalidate his release and compel him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence. He has recently launched a hunger strike and officials fear if he dies in Israeli custody, it will spark renewed violence throughout Yehuda and Shomron.
This led to a request to permit his release to Gaza where he will continue to serve out ten years of his sentence, a request that was approved by the Israel Prison Authority, IDF and the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet). As a result, Sharavana is going to halt his hunger strike and he is expected to be a free man in the very near future.
