PHOTOS: FDNY Hosts Jewish Leaders for Pre-Pesach Fire Safety Seminar

FDNY members joined New York City Jewish leaders on March 12 at FDNY Headquarters to discuss fire safety tips for the Passover holiday.

“One of the most important goals that we all share – in the Jewish community and in the Fire Department – is the strong desire to make certain the people of this city are safe from fire,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said.

This is the second annual event hosted by the FDNY.

Organizers say it, as well as other fire safety outreach, has been successful. During Biyur Chometz (Burning of the Bread) during 2004, 22 civilians were burned and admitted to a burn center. Yet in 2012, there was only one minor burn injury (caused by a bottle that exploded in the fire).

“Our partnership has resulted in less pain and suffering,” Brooklyn Borough Commander James Leonard said. “We absolutely want you to observe your religious traditions, but we want you to be safe.”

He explained designated areas that have been set up for the Burning of the Bread in Williamsburg and Borough Park, ways to contact various units within the Department, and shared safety tips – such as for the use of candles.

Fire Safety Education Director Anthony Mancuso also was there to share fire safety information and give away free smoke alarms.

  1. look at all the firetrucks having to go all around boro park on erev pesach , because all the fires get out of control. the adults do not supervise the kids and the fires are just left burning with no one watching.
