Baruch Hashem the Number of Abortions R”L in Eretz Yisrael are Down

bolAccording to Health Ministry statistics, the number of voluntary abortions performed in Eretz Yisrael has dropped 16% during the last decade. 20,956 requests for abortions were filed with the committee in 2011, of which 20,191 were approved. In actuality, 19,214 were performed.

In 2000, there were 20,278 requests filed, 19,880 approved and 19,373 were performed. While the numbers do not vary much, the statistical decline is the result of the population growth.

In 2000, 142 pregnancies were terminated/1,000 live births and in 2011, 116 terminations/1,000 live births were performed.

Following are the numbers showing the most to fewest abortions in Israel divided by geographic sector

1. Southern region: 12.7%

2. Haifa: 12.1%

3. Tel Aviv: 11.8%

4. Center: 10.7%

5. Northern Regional: 10.4%

6. Yerushalayim: 5.1%

7. Yehuda & Shomron: 4.8%

The average among European Union nations is 226 termination/1,000 live births.

  1. 1. How many of those would have been approved had an orthodox rabbi (with an appropriate medical background) was asked?

    2. How does this number compare with the number of combined casulties from military deaths and terrorist attacks on civilians?

    3. Is the reason for decline that Israeli women are healthier? Is it that standards have been tightened (suggesting many needless abortions in the past)? Is it that the percentage of pregnancies among religious women has increased, since elective (i.e. not medically required) abortions are generally found only among hilonim.

  2. “How many of those would have been approved had an orthodox rabbi (with an appropriate medical background) was asked?”

I haven’t looked at the recent statistics. However, I did analyze this a few years ago and found that about 40% would be permissible under the opinion of the Tzitz Eliezer, who was the leading posek in Israel for medical halachah.

Israel now has one of the lowest abortion rates of countries with reliable statistics.

  3. If you care to reduce these numbers further, donate money to EFRAT, which provides financial and emotional support to prevent voluntary abortions. Many of these women feel desperate, and can’t fathom being able to have another baby. A little support goes a long way.

B”H my family was able to donate enough to save the life of at least one Yiddishe neshama.

(Medically mandated abortions are a different story, obviously.)

  4. IDF Most ‘Female Friendly’ Army in the World

IDF is the world’s most female-friendly army, statistics released Thursday showed. More than one third of the army’s “enlisted men” are women, according to the IDF Spokesperson’s office.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Office released the numbers in time for International Women’s Day, to be commemorated on Friday.

    Keren, (7/3/13)
    female friendly? no way!
consider the crazily high abortion rate in this country before calling this “friendly.” How many Jewish children are killed every day because of what goes on in the IDF?In any case, if it’s really so friendly, how come so many secular females claim to be religious to get an exemption? Everyone knows they’re lying, but nobody gives a hoot.
