NYPD Issued 141,816 Summonses In 2012 For Using Cell Phone While Driving

The NYPD issued 141,816 summonses for blabbing while driving, according to the agency’s year-end data.

A sure-fire way to get a ticket is to flout the city’s seat-belt law; cops gave 131,049 tickets for that. Nearly 130,000 drivers were cited for blowing through traffic signs, while 95,866 got clobbered for tinting their car windows.

  1. Do they have statistics to show that this has reduced the number of accidents?

    If not, this is at most justified as a revenue measure, which might not be enough to justify the cost of enforcement (e.g. the cost of diverting police from stopping murders and thieves to check up on seat belts and cell phones).

  2. No. 1: There is plenty of evidence – I regret I cannot give you any citations – that talking on a cell phone increases the risk of an accident.
