Police in New York City were awaiting the return of a man arrested in Pennsylvania in connection with a gruesome car crash that killed a pregnant woman and her husband on their way to a hospital.
Julio Acevedo surrendered and was arraigned on fugitive charges Wednesday night. The entire proceeding lasted about five minutes, with Acevedo doing more listening than talking.
Police say he was arrested at a mini-mart in Bethlehem without incident.
Acevedo will need to be extradited back to Brooklyn to face charges in the crash that killed Nachman and Raizy Glauber. Their infant son, delivered by emergency C-section after the accident, died the next day.
Acevedo, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, said nothing to officers who took him into custody, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.
The surrender, which occurred shortly after 5 p.m., was brokered by a friend, Derrick Hamilton, who contacted the NYPD to arrange it.
Hamilton met NYPD officers at Grand Central and traveled with them to Bethlehem. Acevedo was given a description of the unmarked police cars that would be waiting for him in the parking lot of the Turkey Hill minimart.
A judge said Acevedo would face an extradition hearing Thursday to address his return to New York, and Acevedo said he understood.
The judge said it was expected Acevedo would waive extradition, meaning he’d agree to return to New York.
