It appears Shas leaders have resigned themselves to the party remaining a member of the opposition in the 19th Knesset. Party leaders have already began acting like an opposition party, telling the media they will be an active opposition and work aggressively towards toppling the ruling coalition.
Party leaders Eli Yishai, Aryeh Deri and Ariel Atias are in agreement, and their first bill will be to limit the number of ministers in the government, in line with the election promise made by the Yesh Atid party. Shas realizes but cutting the number of cabinet posts available, it will significantly complicate efforts to cut deals with coalition partners.
It is clear that the move is not based on political ethics, for as long as Shas was a member of the coalition the matter of cabinet posts was never raised. The bill is a clear example of ‘sour grapes’ on Shas’ part, in line with its promise to actively work to topple the coalition at every opportunity.
Shas leaders hope to have the bill ready in a number of days and they plan to push it aggressively. They are working to limit the number of cabinet appointments to 18. Interestingly, if Yair Lapid and his Yesh Atid party enter the coalition, he will be compelled to support the opposition bill or betray his campaign promise to voters.

Losers usually are ‘sour grapes’, yet is that the role model they want to be?
