Bnei Brak Eruv Targeted in Vandalism Attack

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERARabbonim responsible for the Bnei Brak eruv are already working to assess the damage resulting from vandalism attacks targeting the city’s eruv.

It appears the damage began earlier in the week, on Tuesday 16 Adar 5773, when a woman was seen cutting the eruv on Jabotinsky Street. When the responsible person for the eruv arrived on the scene he saw a woman in her 40s still working to destroy the eruv. When asked to explain her actions, she reportedly stated “I don’t want the chareidim to leave their homes on Shabbos.”

City officials arrived and took the woman’s information, but she was not arrested. It was later learned that it appears the women was busy on Wednesday 17 Adar as well, and this time around, her information was turned over to police. On Thursday morning 18 Adar, the mayor’s office, chief rabbi’s office and askanim began pressuring senior local police officials to take the women into custody as they were trying to assess if they will be able to have the damage repaired by Shabbos.

At the time of this report, Thursday afternoon, it remains unknown if the city’s mehadrin eruv will be operational this Shabbos. It appears the workmen are unwilling to repair the eruv until the woman is taken into custody since they feel she will simply destroy it again if permitted to do so.
